The latest record might not last long. The Michigan and Richmond contingents have been embroiled in a rivalry over this specific Guinness World Record since March 2014, when 776 Rosie lookalikes set the mark for the first time at Willow Run Airport.
Already, an effort is mounting in Michigan to again reclaim the record from Richmond. On Tuesday, Savethebomberplant.org — a website promoting the development of the Willow Run Airport as an historical museum — congratulated the Richmond contingent while imploring its readers to check back for updates on possible dates for another world record attempt.
Anticipating that folks in Michigan may very well succeed, Richmond’s Rosies are already planning another Rosie Rally for Aug, 12 this year.
“We will attempt to beat the record again! Advertisements and additional information will be coming soon,” according to the Rosie the Riveter/World War II Home Front National Historical Park Facebook page.
The broad aim in both Richmond and Michigan, of course, is to keep alive the memory and history surrounding Rosie the Riveter, the iconic character who appeared on famous WWII-era recruitment posters and represented women working industrial jobs to support the war effort. To many women, she has also come to represent women’s empowerment and the struggle for equality.
