With 2,265 Rosies, Richmond appears to have recaptured Guinness World Record

Richmond appears to have brought home the Guinness World Record for gathering of girls and women dressed as Rosie the Riveter, having assembled a reported 2,265 Rosies at the Craneway Pavilion on Saturday.

If verified, the gathering will eclipse the record set last year at Willow Run Airport in Ypsilanti, Mich., where 2,090 Rosie lookalikes gathered.

Saturday’s effort keeps alive a friendly rivalry between the Richmond and Michigan contingents who each share the goal of keeping the memory and history of Rosie alive.

Rosie the Riveter is the iconic character who appeared on famous WWII-era recruitment posters and represented women working industrial jobs to support the war effort. To many women, she has also come to represent women’s empowerment and the struggle for equality.

Richmond fell short of its initial goal to reach 5,000 Rosie, but hey, a Guinness World Record isn’t shabby.

The Rosy Rally was held by the National Park Service in coordination with the Rosie the Riveter Trust, City of Richmond, and Richmond Museum Association.
